Guilty Simpson

Advice for Eminem on his birthday

Eminem

Adam Graham of the Detroit News explores different ways for Eminem to successfully return to the spotlight.

Among them is “Innovate, not renovate”, with Guilty Simpson chiming in.

Innovate, not renovate: Instead of following or kowtowing to current hip-hop trends (still smarting from Em’s urging to “get it crunk” on “Encore’s” closing track?), Eminem should follow his own muse. In other words, let’s not release a ringtone-ready single with a hot YouTube-able dance craze, mmmkay? “I don’t think he has to change according to the game, he can change the game,” says Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson. “I think that’s where a lot of artists go wrong: They try to capture a certain element of the temperature of the game. But if you’re not a new artist trying to break in, what excuse do you really have following trends and not setting them?”

Detroit Hip Hop’s best to be honored tonight

Adam Graham of the Detroit News has written about tonight’s Detroit Hip Hop Awards show.

Killa Kaunn, K-Deezy and Marv Won are among those nominated for this year’s Detroit Hip-Hop Awards, which will be handed out tonight at Plan B in Detroit.

The show, now in its fifth year, aims to celebrate and reward the brightest and best in the Detroit hip-hop community.

“It’s an event that says, ‘We recognize what you’re doing. Maybe others don’t, but we do,’ ” says Mike “Money Mic” Matkin, who along with DJ Knice co-founded the event in 2003.

Awards will be handed out in almost 20 categories, including Song, Album and Video of the Year fields. Performers include Trick Trick, Tone Tone, Guilty Simpson, Black Milk and more. Phat Kat will be receiving the Detroit Recognition Award, a top honor that in previous years has gone to Proof, DJ House Shoes and Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg.

The awards themselves are voted on by visitors at detroithiphop.com, which Matkin runs.

Matkin says he hears from nominees that the recognition from the awards show gives them the fuel they need to pursue their hip-hop dreams on a larger scale.

“It gives them that boost so they can say, ‘I’m doing what I should be doing,’ ” he says. “It’s not a Grammy, but it’s a Detroit Grammy.”

You can reach Adam Graham at (313) 222-2284 or agraham@det news.com.

Guilty Simpson: “Expect me to bring it!”

Guilty Simpson

HipHopDX.com has a new interview with Guilty Simpson and it looks like they’ve been missing out on some dope Detroit Hip Hop from this past decade. The author could brush up on his Detroit Hip Hop a little, having made Guilty seem like a newcomer. The questions, however are on point and let us know what to expect this year from the Dreadnaught.

HHDX: What can we expect from Guilty this year?
Guilty: Expect me to bring it! I’m ready to make my mark and do my thing. Dudes ain’t heard shit yet!

Paradime on “Spill at Will” and Goon Sqwad

Paradime

Paradime has a new interview of his published at HipHopSix.com. The interview comes at a time when Dime has released his latest album Spill at Will, but his solo career isn’t the only thing he’s up to.

Dime is asked about his involvement in Trick Trick’s Goon Sqwad project.

SiX: For the HipHopSiX readers, breakdown the Goon Sqwad for us, how’s that fit into your regime? Break down who’s in that exactly…

Well, GS is still in it’s early stages, but I can tell you that from what we done so far? Shits gonna be ridiculous. It’s Trick-Trick, Guilty Simpson, Bareda, Blackface, Diezel and myself. Trick is the general, and is putting it all together, and we’re pretty much gonna kick the industry in its face and shoot its mother.

SiX: You think Goon Sqwad might blow? Is there anything coming up with all you guys on, as a team?

We would be fools to go into this project without the intent to blow it up, so that’s that. and yea, Trick’s new record kinda gives you some sneak peeks, but nothing will be released until we completely ready.

Athletic Mic League’s Buff1 on Okayplayer

Buff1 logo

Buff1 has been getting strong reviews for his album Pure across the board. It doesn’t hurt that it wasn’t made for BET and that it features some of the world’s favorite emcees in Guilty Simpson and One Be Lo.

Okayplayer
has also taken notice.

As much as I appreciate his mature positivity and responsible perspective, the highlight of the album for me is the Waajeed-produced “SUPREME” featuring my favorite femcee of-the-moment Invincible and the most ubiquitous denizen of Detroit out right now Guilty Simpson talking tough over a vicious break and an ill interpolation of the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” synth riff.

Go to Okayplayer’s Blogarhythms for July 27 to read more.
