DJ DDT in the Michigan Citizen

DJ DDT of FM98 WJLB and Runyon Ave is featured in the Michigan Citizen.

Biba Adams writes:

Now, many years later, DJ DDT is one of Detroit’s best known DJ’s. He is also one of its most dedicated. Known as “The Go-To Guy”, he earned his nickname because, as a well known and long standing member of the Detroit Hip Hop community, he is one of the people who are very often called upon in Detroit hip hop for advice or to DJ a party, or to produce a track or to write a song.

DJ DDT’s response to WJLB boycott

DJ DDT of FM98 WJLB’s “What’s Next on the Menu” program shares his thoughts on the proposed WJLB boycott below (also from MySpace):

A lotta misguided people in the city are yelling JLB isn’t supporting Detroit shit… It’s making me mad, because it’s hurting artists in Detroit who market their shit, or artists who have a fanbase…if that’s the case, I may as well not have a show, and the songs that ARE in regular rotation may as well be taken off…

…before you reply to this and say that we’re not supporting YOU, answer this:

Have you sent music to the radio station?

Have you called to set up a meeting to talk to anyone who works at the station? Do you even know the right people to talk to?

Is your music in stores? Did you market your music to Detroit listeners?

Do you listen to WJLB yourself? If you did, you’d know we play more Detroit music than you think…EVERY day. Please get at me. DJDDT@sprintpcs.com

Another FM 98 WJLB boycott?

This message is floating around MySpace:

Do you love Dilla? How about Phat Kat? Well we do to unfortunatly FM 98 WJLB in Detroit!!! doesn’t have the same love add our page as a friend and help us BOYCOTT FM 98 WJLB!!!! WJLB is refusing to play the new J Dilla Ruff Draft or the new Phat Kat Carte Blanche albums!!!! Help support us by adding us as a friend…SPREAD THE WORD!!!

This page is designed as a boycott of FM 98 WJLB in Detroit. The powers that be have formed this page after learning (from some strong, very strong, sources) that WJLB will not be supporting the new Phat Kat Album Carte Blanche or the new J Dilla album Ruff Draft!!!! The decision came after some people at WJLB heard a preview copy of Phat Kat’s Carte Blanche where DJ Houseshoes makes some statments at the end of True Story part 2. The statements were in regards to the lack of knowledge some of FM 98’s staff had to what is and what is not J Dilla’s great body of work…Though we here have nothing but praise for DJ DDT and his “What’s Next On The Menu” show we can’t say as much for the rest of the station who is refusing to play new music out of Detroit. This page will conitinue to grow as will this explanantion of our misson here…until then BOYCOTT FM 98 WJLB in Detroit for not playing PHAT KAT and J DILLA!!!!

REMEMBER SPREAD THE WORD AND ADD US AS A FRIEND

DJ House Shoes at CertifiedHipHop

Andres Reyes at CertifiedHipHop interviewed DJ House Shoes recently:

House Shoes talking about Detroit’s sound and Detroit’s ‘hip hop radio stations’.

AR: Tell me some about Detroit, because I feel like it’s such an important city to Hip Hop but it doesn’t get recognized when people talk about major cities in Hip Hop

I always tell people, that D sound that is so heralded all around the world, it’s not the Detroit sound, it’s a small family of maybe 50 peeps, that listen to it, the rest of Detroit, they listen to Jeezy and Pac and all that other radio shit. Let me give you the perfect description of this, when Jay passed 98WJLB the so-called ‘Home of Hip Hop,’ played a tribute to Dilla, and they played three Slum joints, Tainted, Ez Up and Selfish, none of which are produced by Dilla.

AR: What!? For real?

Yeah man. The most imitated sound in music in the last 15-20 years, and we don’t get credit for it in the industry. What really fucked me up was the grammy’s, when they put Jay’s face up, I was like ‘just his face?’ That’s the first and last time we’ll hear about Dilla at the grammy’s. Another good example of all this, when I was out in L.A. for the funeral, the week after that they did a quote unquote, ‘what’s next on the menu’ feature, that my man DDT hosts, and he was playing Dilla all night and the fuckin program director, while they’re playin the Badu shit, and the Janet shit, and the program director is all like ‘Oh shit, I didn’t know he did that joint. I didn’t know he produced that.’
