Rock the Bells in Detroit

Kelley L. Carter of the Free Press looks at the Rock the Bells Tour which comes to metro Detroit tonight.

On Wednesday, the Rock the Bells Tour comes to DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, featuring an all-star lineup of talent. On deck to perform at the outdoor concert hall are Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Talib Kweli, MF Doom, Pharoahe Monch, Immortal Technique, Slum Village and Phat Kat.

Some folks call it backpack hip-hop, but that simplifies what these musicians do.

It’s a snappy way of saying that what these guys have in common is substance.

Here’s a look at a documentary of the original Rock the Bells in 2004 which saw Wu-tang reunite on stage.

The film is getting great reviews all-around as is prepares for release. More information is available at www.rockthebellsmovie.com.

Just Blaze on Black Milk: “Underrated” and “…makes some good music”

Real recognize Real.

Just Blaze Black Milk Popular Demand

Just Blaze gives Black Milk respect on his blog in a recent post.

Speakin of Popular Demand, go pick up that Black Milk album out now. (Hey kid I’m a computer.. stop all the downloadin! No GI Joe) I had the pleasure of choppin it up and doing some crate digging with dude overseas a few months back. Had no idea he was responsible for some of my favorite later Slum records until a few hours later. Very understated, and quite underrated. Cool dude.. and makes some good music.

FUN FACT #2: He bought the record he used to make this while we were digging in Australia. He bought like 8 records.. i bought like 80.. still don’t think I’ve found anything as dope as this in that stack yet.. ARGH

DJ DDT of FM98 WJLB and Runyon Ave is featured in the Michigan Citizen.

Biba Adams writes:

Now, many years later, DJ DDT is one of Detroit’s best known DJ’s. He is also one of its most dedicated. Known as “The Go-To Guy”, he earned his nickname because, as a well known and long standing member of the Detroit Hip Hop community, he is one of the people who are very often called upon in Detroit hip hop for advice or to DJ a party, or to produce a track or to write a song.
