Dilla in the Free Press

Kelley L. Carter of the Free Press with a brief review of J Dilla’s Ruff Draft

Master producer J Dilla (sometimes called Jay Dee) died from kidney failure days after his 32nd birthday, and days after he released what was thought to be his last project.

Since then, a few pieces have emerged, and with many now-catalogued tracks, there will be more to come from the man who essentially put Detroit’s hip-hop scene on the map.

A new title from him arrives Tuesday, a release of a 2003 album that was released only in Europe on vinyl. Ruff Draft has long been considered a key piece of work from the producer who laid the blueprint for folks like Kanye West and the Neptunes to give hip-hop a soulful and sometimes outerworld sound.

This new spin on the album is packaged as a double-disc CD, with a few unheard bonus tracks and a second disc that features all instrumentals, which define the classic stylings that Dilla (real name James Yancey) is best known for.

What’s nice about Ruff Draft is that it’s completely stripped down to raw Dilla — a bonus track features guest vocals from Detroiter Guilty Simpson.

It’s a nice reminder of just how good Detroit hip-hop can be.
