Next week is the (re)release of another hip hop triumph from the late J Dilla. Ruff Draft is sure to sell well with the all the love and affection shown to Dilla after his passing. The sad part is that its coming after he has passed. We’re all guilty of that. But some people are seeming to take it a bit far with the “I love J Dilla” t-shirts and telling people “Dilla changed my life”. Really? Do you realize Dilla was building ever since the early 90’s? Did you pick up Welcome to Detroit when it came out? It wasn’t too long ago.

The point is, please don’t turn the love for Dilla into a fad. If you truly appreciate what the man gave to hip hop, and gave to you, learn to appreciate Karriem Riggins. Learn to appreciate DJ Dez, DJ Houseshoes, Slum Village and all the artists who are a part of the foundation Dilla built (as well as Amp Fiddler and those who came before Jay Dee). If he really had that effect on you, you will continue to support his movement long after it is cool to do so.
