Real Detroit asking Black Milk about that Detroit sound in a new interview.
RD: What is it about Detroit’s sound that makes it so unique?
We can do any other region’s sound. I can do a beat like a Timbaland or Dre, but I don’t really think those producers can really capture the same feel that we have in Detroit or do it better. That’s why I think Dilla was the greatest of all time, cause he coulda did anybody’s style, but nobody could capture that Dilla feel exactly.RD: But where does this sound come from; is it all the cars and pollution from the auto industry?
I think that’s a part of the sound. It’s the Motor City. Plus, I think it’s the rich music background that Detroit has. I argue that with people all the time. I think Detroit has a richer background than any other place in the world. The best recording artists have recorded in the city at one time whether it was Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye or Michael Jackson. I think that kinda breeds that vibe into this generation. That spirit is still here. I love that. I wouldn’t want to be from any other place in the world.
