Recently the Michigan Hip Hop community lost an up and coming veteran (if that makes sense) of the scene.
David “Disco D” Shayman, whose family moved to Ann Arbor when he was a child, had at the age of 17 already set up his own production company and released a 12″ single. He rose up the ranks of the DJ scene helping form the “Ghettotech” genre along with DJ Godfather and others.
D had a diverse musical talent that went beyond Ghettotech. Production credits from recent years included songs for Nina Sky, AZ as well as “Ski Mask Way” from 50 Cent’s The Massacre. He had done a great deal of production work for local Michigan talent including Paradime and seemed to have a great deal of work slated for a number of national artists including Chamillionaire.
D was a bright individual, holding a Business degree from the University of Michigan. He used his business knowledge to become a pioneer in the ringtone business as well as secure production work in the corporate world. He is credited with production work for VH1, Best Buy, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Xbox.
Through Disco D’s successes, he also suffered from depression and bi-polar disorder. His illnesses are thought to have contributed to him taking his own life on January 23 of 2007.
Respects and condolences to his friends and family.
